The History of SFSBA
Prior to 1926, the Bloemfontein Bowling Association controlled activities in Bloemfontein and together with the Kimberley Club, Kroonstad and Bethlehem, formed the Central SA Bowling Association in 1918, with Mr John Fitchat, the first President of the Association.
This became the Central District Bowling Association in 1921 with Mr R Cumming as the first President followed by Mr AC White. In 1926 a National Tournament was held and the new association was founded by the name of SFS and Basutoland Bowling Association under Mr John Fitchat as President. On the 4th of October 1964 Basutoland became independent and renamed Lesotho. The words "and Basutoland" were then removed from the official name, which became Southern Free State Bowling Association (SFSBA). Currently the President is Mr Pieter Rossouw from Winburg.
Basically Through the years players and teams from SFSBA have competed in numerous Inter District Tournaments, National Championships with great levels of success. SFSBA have also produced several Protea players. In 2005, 2006 & 2007 three of our players got their National Colours. At that stage all of them were part of the Under 25 side that dominated the Under 25 scene for several years. SFSBA are the Gold medal carriers of the 1994, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2013 Under 25 Inter Districts. And Silver winners in 1999, 2002 and 2003. The Open Inter District sides are also the Gold medal carriers of the 2004, 2007, 2009 SA Inter District Tournaments and Runners-Up in 2006 and 2008. Showing that a combination of young talent and experienced players is the way to go!!
During 2012 Southern Free State Bowling Association decided to change their logo to the well-known icon of Free State sport, the Cheetah! This new logo, designed by Mr. Roe Wiid, was introduced in 2013. The new logo shows a golden shield to represent the success achieved by the players from previous years as well as the expectations of SFSBA and aspirations of all the talented players that will represent SFSBA in the coming years.
